christmas sweater

It's a very cold day today, but this sweater is warm, it's seasonal, and it's old. It was on my closet shelf and originated in Christmases long, long ago.
Do YOU have an old sweater
that you hang on to?
I never wear this one enough to feel like I got my $$$'s worth.  It's rare that I buy a new sweater, but I bought a bunch like this back in the days when our family didn't number 19 and I was buying identical tops for us to wear for Christmas pictures....Given the numerical growth of our family (see prior post for picture) I can't afford to do that any longer.  (Maybe that's another reason I don't part with THIS one.)

  1. I have some older sweaters that I can't bear to part with, either. And, like you, maybe it's because I know I'll probably never be able to spend money like that again. Just HOPE we can find something comparable at our fave thrift shops!!! HOPE 2013 is good for you and your family, my friend!

  2. Certain garments never live up to their expectations and haunt in our closet while others linger with memories or fondness like your deer sweater. I have two lightweight pullovers, fairly cheap ones, that bought to get me through a winter of work. They are about 10-12 years old but have worn like iron, more than higher priced ones. I think I will let them go and then...hang on to them a while longer.

I wish we could get back our culture using things more and longer. I remember a coat I had in high school. The lining was shot and outside worn but no money for a new coat. My Gran took an wonderful lining and insulation too from a 20 year old coat and put it in mine...it was very warm, warmer than the original. The lining had been made during WWII era...very servicable for many years more.

  4. I have two old sweaters that my mom knit for my dad when they were dating. I appropriated them in the 80s, as a teen, loving the oversized shape and the smell of my dad on them. My dad died in 1997, but I can't ever get rid of these two - they still smell like him.

    1. Oh, Sheila....that is such a "tender" story. I totally understand why you'll never get rid of them!

  6. I have one that was a Christmas gift, about 20 years ago. It is a winter scene, not necessarily Christmas theme, is wool and a Ralph Lauren. I will probably keep it forever, even though I don't wear it much. It is very warm!

  7. Here in the Desert I don't wear sweaters very often but I do wear Sari Wraps for warmth when it gets chillier in the Evenings. What I tend to hold onto in my wardrobe are my Magnolia Pearl Bloomers because I still wear them all the time and Love them as much as when I first bought them many years ago. Wearable Art is always in Style. I had to Smile about you getting up close and personal with your new Smart Phone... The Son has one and I cannot even figure out how to turn it on... which didn't make ME feel very smart! *LOL*

  8. I collect sweaters. I have given some away through the years but there are some I never want to part with. One of my favorites is a beautiful olive green wool with a cream snowflake pattern. It's also hand knit according to the tag. I get so many compliments when I wear it. You'll like this, Rebecca...I got it for $3.00 at Goodwill about five years ago.
    Your sweater is really pretty.

  9. Hi Rebecca...Nice sweater. I have several with a Christmas theme. They never wear out cuz they are worn just for a short season every year. So I keep all of them in a cedar chest in a spare guestroom til the next Christmas comes along. Susan

  10. Loving the blue and white. I don't own any Christmas sweaters. Maybe I should hit the thrift shops about now.

  11. I had an old sweater that I hung onto for years. My children had given it to me years ago--probably at least 25. It was a United Colors of Benneton brand, multi-colored wool. I wore it untill there were holes in the cuffs and next to the button holes, but I found wool yarn the same colors as the sweater and wove and crocheted the holes. Just this past year I donated the sweater. I certainly got my use out of it! It was my favorite sweater.

    1. I absolutely LOVE the story of your old sweater, Joy! Those U.C. of Benneton are definitely "work horses"--well worth the $$$.
