a busy day

He worked....it paid off!
Our $25 purchase now stands handsomely
in our living room
holding our TV!
It replaced a much lower and longer buffet that served the purpose for years..
I emptied much of its contents into
this white cupboard
in our kitchen.
It was a busy day!
We don't do this nearly as often as we used to!

repurposing. again.

When we moved this shelf from it's perch on the stairway landing
to the "new" room, I knew I would need to replace it with SOMEthing.
Looking around - outdoors, even -
I eyed the rusted base to a patio table.
Topped with a beautiful oak table leaf,
it is well on its way to being the perfect replacement.
Thanks to the skill of my husband,
the top was given a classy edge and the base will be painted black.
Use it up;
Wear it out.
Make it do
Or do without!

masculine vibes

While not finalized (is it ever?),
I've had a good time adding masculine vibes
 to our newly remodeled bathroom.
This shelf & its contents, for instance...
Hubby attached the wooden towel rack to the bottom
after a few adaptations to make it fit.
Everything here was repurposed, by the way,
and probably purchased at a thrift store or garage sale.

small and spectacular

It didn't ALWAYS look like this!
It began with this box that caught my eye a l-o-n-g time ago
at a garage sale or thrift store.
It sat on a shelf.
Forgotten--
until my slow process of sorting and down-sizing began.
I found some wooden pegs which my talented husband turned into legs.
He inserted shelves and painted the entire piece,
and the transformation was complete!
Small and spectacular, it is a fine showcase for miniatures.

what I saw

The ad on the facebook site called it a "gun cabinet".
This is what I saw...
...and this is who is making it happen - seen here cleaning it out after sanding before painting...
It's going to be BEAUTIFUL!
 I'll show you later.

re-purposing

These photos show some of our re-purposed  projects this week.
(The buffet and green desk shown in my last post sold, by the way!)
My husband picked up some free lumber and a unique work bench
from a Craig's List post.

I saw a kitchen island waiting to be fashioned in that work bench!
So we put it on casters, I primed it, and Gary painted it a bright blue.
Meanwhile, I worked on the smaller table (below).
I want to stencil a bit on the front yet.
These projects bring in a little extra income in addition to the
pleasure we experience in re-purposing them...
In the food department, I altered a crockpot recipe to use some garden produce
we'd been given.  This is the way I made it:

Polish Sausage and Cabbage Soup
2 cups potatoes, cubed and peeled
4 cups cabbage, shredded it fine
1 carrot, shredded it fine
1 large onion, chopped
2 servings of turkey sausage, sliced
4 cups water with chicken bouillon cubes dissolved in it
black pepper and salt to taste
Directions:  Place potatoes, cabbage, carrot, onion, , sausage, pepper and salt in crock pot.
Pour broth over all. Cover, cook on high for 5 - 6 hours.

A couple days later, I re-purposed the leftovers
and added a few extra potatoes and some more turkey sausage
and we enjoyed the leftovers.
Finally, me wearing a re-purposed dress for church this morning
standing surrounded by re-purposed treasures of various sorts.

making do

Some times, you just figure out how to "make do"!
When the glass on the top of this wrought-iron stand got shattered,
I decided to bolt a silver-plate tray to its top.
It will rust, I suppose.
But meanwhile, it serves a purpose.
As they say,
"Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without."

How have YOU been making do lately?

A Finished Project

Some of you may remember the project we undertook
to turn an old, beat-up box into an attractive leggy chest.
Well, this is the end product.
We learned a lot from this transformation.
I'll be interested to find out whether the gal who had expressed an interest in it
is happy with the finished product, or if I get to keep it!

Rivals

Rivaling a little, chippy metal stool for a spot in my kitchen
 is this wooden chair bottom.
He used it for years in the garage for sit-down projects.
"Just fill in those holes and rub in some tung oil all over it!"  I urged him.
Now it's MINE.
Ready to pull up to the table for extra guests.
It "sits" really comfortably!
Hmmmm.  Just maybe they can co-exist.
(A year from now, I'm probably going to look back on this phase of my life and wonder
what in the world I was going through!  This chippy stuff is just where I am right now....)

painting with "oops" paint

SOOOOO excited to find "Oops" paint at one of our local hardware stores--
green to finish the potting bench, above...
and a great shade of blue for the vintage vanity table, below
After a second coat of paint and a little glass knob for the drawer, this will be darling!

By the way, "Oops" paint is what one of our local hardware stores labels paint that is returned -- for whatever reason not to a customer's liking. It is GREAT quality paint - sometimes strange colors but at a significantly lower price from its original. As my husband says, it's actually easier
to pick from 3 shades of green "Oops" paint than the 40-50 shades or so of green
on those little color strips!

Before and After

This Before and After session was brought to you by
a proud and happy wife!
After finding this old stereo/radio cabinet advertised for free
on Craigslist, my husband went to work to transform it
into a handsome piece of furniture with multiple
options for storage.  (We live in an old house, and storage options are ALWAYS useful!)
It is taking the place of THIS one - also an old radio cabinet
(with less storage options)....
We change things up a LOT around here!

The Holiday Weekend

Cleaning out the garage and shed
 spawned some projects.
My husband suggested using the miscellaneous and rusted pieces
to be bases for three "bottle trees".
Bottles were found curbside; rusted and miscellaneous pieces from who-knows-where?!

He also transformed this and another piece
 ...into this!
Both were either garage sale or thrift store finds
that had sat in a corner for some time anticipating their transformation!
They've already been purchased.  We have an empty corner!  Yay!

Saling, Saling!

On the way to a small, neighboring town to their town-wide garage sales
I tore the fabric (above) into strips
that I tied around the lamp shade frame.
I think I like it!
If I had it to do over again, I'm not sure I would have painted it.
I would have just left it rusty...
"Don't be intimidated by audacity; be audacious, but with taste.
You also need intuition, originality, vigor...Don't get taken in by fashion.
A secret:  love your house; love makes miracles."
(Madeleine Castaing)
Arriving in Paulding, Ohio, we parked the car and walked.
And walked some more.
I snatched up the soup tureen when I found it for $1
and the Pfaltzgraff children's set of dishes for half of that $1!
How about THESE?  Five of them...
We found a few other items, but I'm most excited about
two pieces of furniture...
the first had been purchased at an auction of their old school.
(I can't wait to see what wonders my husband works with it!)
The second (below) needs quite a bit of work also
but should be nice when finished!
After lunch on the courthouse square,
we traveled home and unpacked.
What a great Saturday!

She Made Me Do It

Look what Dawn the Bohemian started!
My husband rigged up this support so I could spray paint
a primer and finish coat of paint
on this old lampshade form.
It had served as yard art
until Dawn brought up the subject of
"the perfect deconstructed lampshade"!
Stay tuned to see where this deconstructed lampshade ends up!
And THANK YOU, DAWN!
