keeping it simple this sunday morning

 





Today, in my black and white,
I should blend in nicely
with the keyboard I'll be playing....
Simple and all thrift store purchases --
even the opaque black legware!

(I removed the black necklace that
criss-crossed the scarf in the bottom photo.
It wasn't working.  Obviously.)

My outfit also goes along with the "trifle" I made for our small group's meeting last night!

Though the layers were blurred,

it WAS delicious.

I borrowed my sister's trifle server and think I might 

keep my eyes peeled for one at a thrift store for myself!

I've got all KINDS of ideas about how to use it.

but changed it around when I saw a friend wearing hers THIS way--

While showing a bit of blue today, I might as well show you the closed curtains over
our kitchen sink....

 While usually open and looking through the back enclosed porch into the back yard,
when company came Saturday night, I decided to close them
to block the view of the cluttered porch.
It makes for a cozy feel in my kitchen, and I rather LIKE it.

(At least until I get the porch straightened up!)

vacation miscellany

 Three see-through plastic storage boxes.  Fifty cents each.  Always useful at OUR house!

 Never one to pass up ANYthing blue and white, I snatched up these candles.

 I've always loved this quote (above).  

I was happy to find it on a plaque - very reasonably priced.

 This, I believe, is a juicer.  It has already taken its place in a wooden bowl

 containing other wooden kitchen tools.  ($.25)

 I've never figured out how to wear scarves properly myself, but I admire them...

 and I COULDN'T pass up this colorful one made in Italy designed with a map and scenes 

 from Greece.

Maybe one of these days I'll show you the books I bought while visiting thrift stores 

in states south of ours.  I just can't seem to resist scouring the book shelves.

I DID resist several furniture pieces.  There just wasn't room in the car!

weekend wardrobe

 Dark, windy and damp...

 maybe a little color will perk me up...

I often forget to add a scarf to my outfits -
(or simply despair of tying them attractively).

Not this morning!

I found this scarf in a thrift store while on vacation recently.  

It works with the striped shirt from my "closet".

slim pickings

While my husband golfed during our vacation week, I visited thrift stores.  

I'm not such an avid purchaser lately since our house is full and running over with "stuff".

However, I couldn't pass up this $.75 scarf.  

Here it is on an unmade hotel bed, wrapped around the library book* I hope to finish before we get home.

When I get home, I'll post a picture of the sweet little footstool I found.

*I'm posting several of the quotes that have jumped off its pages on  my other blog.  It's a well-written book about life in Umbria.

scarves someday

This morning as I was reading my favorite blogs, I was reminded about this colorful scarf I bought a long time ago at a thrift store.  I am rather inept at tying scarves.  I never feel that I've mastered the art and seldom end up wearing one.  I should have spent more time looking at the examples on Low Fat Dressing.  I COULD have done better.

 One thing is for sure...this scarf has a lot of beautiful colors and patterns in it!

If I could master the skill required for tying it, it would have multiple possibilities!  

Each corner has it's own color combination.

 One of these days, I'll get it figured out!

Dressing for a Mocha Heath Latte

Here's one of the beige/tan skirts that will become my summer "uniform"!  They've been packed away during the winter, but I brought them out before vacation to enjoy when I returned home.

I'm wearing this one with a stretchy brown top & have added an animal print scarf to cover the cleavage situation....I've found shopping for this style of skirt easy at thrift stores - especially since I can fit into 8's and 10's. 

I wore this to meet a friend for coffee this morning.  I think I matched the color of my Mocha Heath Latte!

This and That

Word of an undiscovered Thrift Store has come to me!  I'm hoping we can squeeze the time out of our Saturday to check it out!  If we do, I'm sure I'll be blogging about it here soon.

Wearing a stretchy fit hot pink top with my trusty gray skirt.  It looked a little bare, so I added the scarf.  I'm not sure how long I'll leave it on...

My schedule today includes a little of this and that.

Today's Outfit

After downloading this picture, I changed my jacket for one without the fur collar.  It looks much better!  Note the leopard print belt matching the scarf...





I added some clip-on earrings that give a vintage touch to my outfit.

THRIFT COMPETITION

I'm sitting in my recliner in a robe this morning while the wind whips the snow outside.  I have no plans to go anywhere - last of all thrifting!  I thought I'd take the time to expand on my last post where I mentioned that a customer had thinned out the 50 cent rack ahead of me...

I am only aware of the competition at this one smaller thirft store where all clothing with one color of price tags is gathered each Monday morning and put on a rack and sold for 50 cents .  I'd been there previously on Monday afternoons and noticed there wasn't so much on it, so THIS time I went early - just not early enough!  I couldn't believe the PILES of clothes being folded up and bagged for  the first customer!

I'm not aware of this currently happening at other stores (although years ago when I thrifted out of necessity for kids' clothes, etc. I DID know of one store where people lined up outside the door before it opened). At another store I frequent, I notice that many of the furniture pieces have "sold" signs on them.  It always makes me wonder if it comes out on a certain day, people know it, and buy up all the "good" stuff before I get there.  I guess I could ask.  I'm not going to stir the waters too much there because it seems no matter how large my pile is, the clerk smiles and says, $2.68.

I did finally get out of my robe and dress for a cozy at-home day.

Wool Casual Jackets

It's warm, it's stylish.  I love the buttons and the pockets.  I have three of these wool jackets - all thrifted.  One is primarily green; the other brown.

Today I'm wearing it with the same skirt I wore yesterday, a new scarf ( Christmas gift from my mother-in-law), and gray stockings.




I still remember a jacket my grandmother owned similar to this. It hung in a small closet in their garage. She would don it when she went to the garden on chilly days. Maybe that's why I like these jackets so much...

Today I'm Wearing and Wondering...

Wearing...a little color since the skies may  remain gray....

I'll work mostly at home today - although afternoon may find us at Borders...

Wondering...why yesterday's pictures turned out so sharp and clear and today's (and others in the past) so fuzzy...

First Sunday in 2010

For church today I'm wearing a gray wool skirt, black top, gray opaque hosiery, and gray shoes.  Since taking the picture, I've decided to tie the scarf differently.  No time to rephotograph!

All thrifted.  Earrings and bracelet, black and white stones, received as a gift this Christmas.

Catching up with 2010

I'm already trying to catch up with 2010!  I had a few errands to run - otherwise am staying at home trying to ward off a cold that seems determined to get me down!  It's VERY cold outside and snow flurries keep the sky dotted with large, lazy flakes.*

My New "Pashini"

My sister gave me two 100% pashini scarves for my birthday.  She purchased them while in Turkey earlier this year.  My daughter showed me this wonderful way to tie them. I really like the braided look of this technique!

SEE WHAT $4.50 BOUGHT!

A simple outfit selected to show the newly thrifted silk scarf I bought yesterday. I am more and more comfortable with scarves and, to my surprise, am starting to feel quite "naked" without them!

Among the other things $4.50 bought yesterday:  a brand new Christmas candle shaped like a log, a bunch of unused red candles, three tiny (and I mean TINY) reindeer, a vintage Fisher Price airport sans accessories, a unique nickle-plated piggy bank, two blue and white cups/mugs (one Delfts), a small vintage pillow, and  a Holly Hobbie 1973 commemorative Christmas plate.  Actually, there were several other items in my basket, too!  Merry Christmas to me!
