simplicity and purpose

You may well argue that my taste in decor doesn't lean toward simplicity...

but given my attraction to these photos in magazines that caught my eye yesterday

I am convinced that my purpose in creating a comfortable home is achieved

best for us by a simple combination

of old wood, books, warm colors and one-of-a-kind objects.
Not a lot has changed over the years when it comes to my purpose--
or the way I go about achieving it!

in with the old

Seemed like the right time to figure out

where I'd stored the early autumn decorations.

Having found them,
I was pleased with the ones I'd chosen to keep last year at the end of the season.

"In with the old," is my motto this year.

All but the white one with a lid (which I made in a ceramics store)

were thrift store finds.

I doubt that ANY of them are in the same place this year as last...

I'm enjoying the small change of scenery.

the dark side

However light the current decorating trends may take us,

I remain charmed by the dark side.

Sitting in my rocking chair this morning before the sun rises,

I am more at home than ever with my dark wood, candles, books,

and simple furniture.

Accessories, recently re-curated, catch my eye

as I sit back with a fresh cup of coffee

to enjoy the dark side a wee bit before the day turns busy.

and then there were five

Disclaimer: These photos were taken at night.

I'm well aware that their quality is less than wonderful.

But...

Clean up has commenced.

With only one small possibility of construction dust remaining,

I could wait no longer to begin my trial arranging of the

dining area of our kitchen.

A lamp or two were added.

And then there were five!

We took a break from it all this evening

and played a game of Upwords

by their light.

always evolving - never static

While reading the August 1993 issue of

House Beautiful last night,

I came across THIS sentence, and my heart leaped:

"The farmhouse seemed a retreat far from the world—a place where an ascetic aristocrat

might retire to read philosophy and reorder his soul."

Ours is not a farmhouse;

nor am I an aristocrat...

but in every other way,

I believe this is the inner ideal that I have long held

for my surroundings.

I look around me and see bits and pieces of just such a

"retreat from the world".

Like me, our house is a work in progress--
a place AND a soul reordering itself.

Always evolving.

Never static.

everyday fashion

This morning: A thrifted T, belt and necklace...

topped with a thrifted brown denim jacket...

wearing a thrifted, Jones corduroy skirt

and photographed via a thrifted mirror.

Style doesn't get MUCH thriftier than this!

Well, actually, yes it does.

I wore the same outfit yesterday.

I don't plan to see the same set of people today.

(Not that it would matter.)

Do YOU ever wear the same outfit two days in a row?

While wearing the outfit yesterday, I stopped at a garage sale.
It was being set up as I shopped...
I couldn't resist this frame.
It's a BIG one.

re-cycle

I think it was the belt I bought for a quarter that I'm trying to show off here...

or maybe the Worthington (brand) skirt that was $1.25

at my Favorite Thrift Store.

While I'm at it, I'm excited about an old wash stand

we purchased at a garage sale this week.

Gnawed by rodents while it sat in a barn,

it is now undergoing an extensive renovation at the hands of my husband.

Just look at those great "pulls"!

I couldn't pass up this mirror, either.

I sold it quickly to a friend who is putting it in her shop.

I suspect it is up for sale again.

The RE-cycle continues!

mix and match

I purchased these three pillows yesterday at a thrift store.

A tag on them assured me that they had been through a sanitizing process.

For 75 cents each (small ones) and a dollar and a quarter for the larger one,

I couldn't pass them up.

I SO like the pattern & colors.

I'm trying them out with a couple of others on our vintage sectional couch.

Floral patterns in most any color scheme always catch my eye...
(The yellow in my "new" pillows is not quite as bright
as these pictures make it appear.)
