My Theory of Necklines
This morning I selected a white shirt to wear with my black nylon skirt. This particular shirt has a square neckline. I'm not sure I have another in my wardrobe! But I like it.
At age 63, my neck is not my greatest feature. But rather than trying to hide it with a turtle neck, I wear necklines that expose a little more "skin" than just my neck. My perception is (and I hope it has SOME accuracy) that it takes the focus away from the unpleasant parts of my neck by enlarging the "field".
What do you think? How do YOU (if you have a less-than-perfect neck) deal with it?
By the way, in keeping with my blog title and purpose, both the shirt and skirt were purchased at a thrift store...

I really like that square neckline on you! I can't wear that style myself; my shoulders are too sloping, or something else makes it just look weird on me. Oval scoops are my best neckline.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, it does have to do with showing a little more skin, but the shape of your shoulders, neck and chest play into it as well. Look for more squares when you are shopping! It's totally you.
Thanks for the affirmation, Kristen. I DO like oval scoops, too. And they (oval scoops) are easier to find, too, I think...
DeleteHi Rebecca, I don't think I have any square necklines but I do prefer v-necklines. I think you may be right about showing off a little more skin thereby taking the focus off of your neck. BTW, I'm not fond of the way my neck is looking these days!

Oh, yeah....I like V-necklines, too! I guess it comes down to ANYthing that shows a little skin :)
DeleteI can't bear the feel of fabric round my neck or my wrists so I never wear cover-up tops.
ReplyDeleteMy neck at 56 is OK. Yes, my chest skin isn't great but, as long as I don't let it ALL hang out and stay decent, I wear anything except a V or a high-neck.
That top you have on looks good.
Oh Rebecca, my whole body is a less than perfect affair! Hide one thing, expose another unless a blanket is in fashion! I do like the square neckline and it is most flattering to you.
ReplyDeleteThat top does look good. It's much better to display a little more flesh than walk around stifled in a polo neck! x
ReplyDeleteI think that is a great idea, certain necklines look good with certain shapes of faces..I had this old vintage book that talked about it If I can find it I will dig it out for you and show you ~the square neckline looks great on you....I look really bad in a scoop neckline but look great in a V or the boat line I think it is called....You look very pretty Love Heather
ReplyDeleteI give up trying to hide my neck...I do not look good in a v. You look nice in the square neck line. I like what Bookie said...hide one thing expose another.
ReplyDeleteYeah....that IS a pretty good theory - "Hide one thing; expose another" :)
DeleteI like the neckline on the shirt, it is unusual too. I usually go for v-neck tee's and if I find one with 3/4 sleeves I feel I've struck gold. I do like turtlenecks in the winter.

My neck is definitely aging, but I don't think about it when I dress. I don't wear turtle necks, but I do keep my neckline no lower than an inch below the two bones that stick out on either side. That way I don't have to be concerned about bending over and showing everything clear to my belly button. :)

I think you are right about that. I have two boat neck tops and I think I look better in them than in a crew top. It pulls the eye away to the sides which are better than the neck. A square neck would work, too.
ReplyDeleteThe square neckline is very flattering on you.
