gearing up

If my LAST post here was "winding down", then this one MUST be "gearing up"!  It was one of the best vacations ever for me.  But all good things must come to an end.

The End has involved putting away many of the thrift store finds obtained during our vacation days.  This book is one of them.  Selected because of a microscope set we'd thrifted awhile back and given to a grandson, the book had a bit of musty odor.  I "sunned it" for awhile and then decided to google the subject to see if I could find any hints for ridding it of its smell.

The suggestion I'm trying here is to insert dryer (softener) sheets among its pages and place in a sealed bag for 3 days or so.  We'll see.

Have YOU tried anything that successfully addressed this "problem"???

This box was another vacation purchase ($1).  My husband removed the sloppy paint job and stained it with a walnut stain.

What an improvement!  I can't have enough boxes, it seems.

Don't you "love" finding beautiful wood under paint.
Such a pretty box...what are you going to put in it?
    Take care,

  3. Just wanted to tell you that I've just ordered your book, "The Beauty of a Disciplined Life: 10 Studies on the Book of Proverbs". I'm so looking forward to reading it and perhaps using it to teach my ladies Sunday school class from!

  4. I had read to put in a bag with crumpled newspaper. I have bought magazines that used the fabric softener sheet method to get the musty smell out. I'm afraid I ended up with many headaches because of that. Laundry detergent perfumes are an allergen for me.

Have loved seeing all the treasures. I posted my last found treasures this afternoon.

    1. I saw the "newspaper" suggestion, too, Terri. Have you ever tired it? Honestly, I'm doubtful about the fabric softener sheets, but I thought it would be worthy a try.

  5. I wish I did know how to get rid of must smell. We had to take my new car in because if smelled awful. If had something to do with the air conditioner. Hope you have success.

  6. Rebecca, I've had some success with ridding musty book smells with newspaper. Put a sheet of newspaper between pages (about every 10 pgs) and wrap the whole book in a pile of about 5 newspaper pages. This takes a while (maybe a couple of months???) and during that time I change the newspaper occasionally. I've found this successful on books about the size you picture - not so successful on your standard thick novel.

    1. Thanks Darla. I wonder if part of the "secret" isn't in giving it time to work and not getting impatient????

  7. I did something similar and the only other suggestion I have is I kept mine on top of my clothes dryer while I was waiting for it to give up its musty smell. Might have been my imagination, but I felt the heat from the dryer helped speed up the progress.
