I found these pieces at the same Church Rummage Sale
where I purchased the white wool sweater.
Can you help me out with the name of this type of art?
I think I used to know....but I've forgotten.
You can imagine me trying to carry the pair of brass candlesticks
AND the framed art
as I traversed the gymnasium-sized room!
Somehow I managed to put this decorative mask under one arm
as I made my way to the table to pay!
Would it be hammered metal art? I vaguely remember my grandmother always had two small framed pictures hung in her hallway when I was a child. She must have done them in the late 40's or early 50's.
ReplyDeleteJeanne, I THINK it is on fabric, somehow.....I really need to research this better. It is "raised"...)
ReplyDeleteLove the candlesticks. I haven't been to a church rummage sale in a long time, but they can be wonderful.

Hi Rebecca....Loved every one of your purchses. Every one! The art, the candlesticks and the mask. Great job! Susn
ReplyDeletehi my dear!! snap. I adore denim jackets too, would love to see your collection in a post one day! Lovely finds as usual, wish we hadmore frequent church rummage sales, or jumble sales as we say! Hope you and your family are well, great to hear from you and have a good week xxx
ReplyDeleteAll nice but the mask is a real eye catcher!
ReplyDeleteI think the art looks like it's Siamese. That's my guess. I love your candlesticks. There is absolutely no way that lovely white sweater would sell for half dollar anywhere in my area. No way.
ReplyDeleteIt looks Thai to me and it's utterly fabulous, I'd have grabbed it, too!
ReplyDeleteI was depositing some money but it rained too much so it's still waiting for a dry morning! Diana Ross is a mirror, I used to have a Starsky and Hutch one when I was younger! x
I think the art pieces are "rubbings". That is poduced by putting a soft piece of paper over an engraved image and rubbing on top to show the elevated part of the image. AA simple rubbing would be when you rub over a coin to see the image of the coin
ReplyDeleteYes. I think this is it. I also remember (from my distant past) that there is another name for it, too....
DeleteIf the art is paper I could call it embossing - some handmade papers look quite a lot like fabric. I agree with the Siam/Thailand connection a couple of people mentioned. Lovely in any case.

It may be a form of paper I'm not familiar with. Just looks more "flexible" somehow. I'm sure this is the general technique. I surely do like it - though it doesn't exactly fit anything else I have :)
Deletecool art...it may be a rubbing...where you lay the pieces of fabric over the pattern you want transferred and iron it...similar to embossing.
ReplyDeleteIS IT A BRASS RUBBING
ReplyDeleteHmmmmmmm. Now this might be!
DeleteI believe what you have here was referred to as a temple rubbing when I
ReplyDeletepurchased some in Bangkok in the late 60's. I had a pair of these for
many years. They were inexpensive souvenirs to bring back at that time.
It was the framing of them after getting them home that cost much more. Memories..... Marie
Could be! This one HAS been well-framed. I imagine it cost quite a bit to do so. (More than I paid for it at the rummage sale!)
